The Best Feed Mixture Horizon for Fishing

how bait attracts fish

Every angler knows that bait works best when it stays within a fish’s reach for as long as possible. The longer the bait remains in its zone, the higher the chance of a bite. Since most mixtures sink to the bottom and only a few can stay near the surface or midwater for long, anglers use different feeding methods for bottom, surface, and mid-depth fish.

In simple terms, the closer your fishing line is to the bottom, the less often you need to throw bait. When the mixture settles on the bottom, you can feed less frequently but should increase the amount of initial bait. A strong base helps fish find the feeding area more easily.

Feeding Frequency and Fish Behavior

Frequent tossing of ground bait not only attracts bottom-feeding fish but also spreads scent and particles through the water. This improves visibility and helps more fish notice the feeding spot. Sometimes, frequent feeding even encourages fish to rise toward the surface. Larger, more active fish often chase away smaller ones, creating a clear feeding hierarchy.

However, this approach has limits. Too much feeding can break up the bait, letting the current carry particles away. As a result, inexperienced anglers often struggle to control their feeding patterns, especially in running water where currents can shift without warning.

The Challenge of Accurate Casting

Casting accuracy matters most in places with unpredictable flow, such as man-made channels or competition sites. In calm water, a short or long cast only slightly widens the feeding zone. But in moving water, even small errors let the current spread your bait downstream. You then waste time covering a larger area to find active fish.

Accurate throws also help you hit the right fishing point  the spot where bait meets the fish’s feeding depth. Keeping the bait in that position lets you target the most productive zone without constantly adjusting to changes in current.

Finding the Absolute Fishing Depth

“Absolute depth” refers to how far the bait travels from the surface to the fish. Several factors affect this: how often you feed, the size of each portion, the amount of starting bait, and how it mixes with water. When fishing above the bottom, slowly sinking particles must pass through the feeding zone repeatedly. Because each particle sinks at a different speed, some stay longer within reach.

As the depth increases, you should reduce the frequency of throws but increase the size of each portion. The bait must be visible and concentrated enough for fish to notice it even in deep water. Otherwise, it disperses too much and turns into a weak column instead of an inviting cloud.
