Traveling to South Africa is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. The country is filled with breathtaking beauty from lush green landscapes to desert plains and stunning coastlines. With four distinct climatic regions close to each other, every area offers something new to explore. South Africa is the most advanced nation on the continent, yet it faces challenges like crime and corruption, common in countries where wealth and poverty coexist.
Take Travel Precautions Seriously
When traveling to South Africa, it’s important to be alert and well-prepared. Never pack anything valuable in your checked luggage. The Johannesburg airport is notorious for theft. My friends lost sneakers and computers from the paid storage counter, and even my toiletry kit disappeared. Keep all electronics and valuables in your hand luggage.
Be extra cautious, especially at night. Avoid going out alone unless you’re in a gated or guarded community. Always keep your credit card in sight. My MasterCard was copied, and a large amount of money was stolen. Thankfully, the company resolved it quickly because I had notified them of my travel dates in advance. Interestingly, the theft happened after I had already left the country.
A Gunfight I’ll Never Forget
I even witnessed my first gunfight when thieves robbed a gas station across the street. It was surreal nothing like the movies!
The Luxury Scam at Sun City
My worst experience happened at the Palace of the Lost City, South Africa’s most luxurious hotel. One day, I struggled to open our room safe. My wife called the front desk, and they immediately offered to send security for a “battery check.” Moments later, a well-dressed man with a hotel logo on his lapel arrived. He plugged in an electronic device, opened and closed the safe, and asked me to enter my code to ensure it worked. I did and that was my mistake.
That night, while we were at dinner, someone entered the room, opened the safe, and stole all the rand I had stored. Strangely, they left the foreign currency and passports untouched. The next morning, hotel security reviewed the safe’s data and confirmed that it had been opened twice while we were away. We filed a complaint, but nothing came of it.
If you travel often, you’ll eventually lose a few things maybe a few bucks, a camera, or a toiletry kit. It’s part of the journey.
Why I’d Still Visit South Africa Again
Yes, traveling to South Africa can be risky, but I’d go back in a heartbeat. The people are warm, the food is incredible, and the service is top-notch. It’s also one of the most affordable and fascinating destinations I’ve ever visited where the richest and the poorest live side by side.
I’ll share more stories and experiences from South Africa in future posts. Stay tuned!
