Whether you’re planning your first adventure, your next trip, or simply dreaming of beautiful places, here are three great sources for travel inspiration.
Use these ideas to explore destinations you’re curious about, try activities you’ve never done, and discover places that once felt impossible to reach.
1. Trips from Tour Operators
Browsing trip itineraries is a fun way to explore different countries and cultures. You can also see sample activities designed for various types of travelers — those who seek variety, cultural experiences, or physical challenges.
Most tour operators offer free brochures filled with trip descriptions, photos, and details. Even if you don’t plan to book a tour, flipping through these brochures can spark amazing ideas. In fact, that’s how I found my first adventure.
Some adventure tour companies offer more than a thousand trips on all continents. A single brochure can inspire even the most experienced traveler.
Here are two small-group adventure tour operators worth checking out (links take you to the brochure request pages, or you can browse trips on their websites):
-
GAP Adventures – one of the best “Do It All Outfitters,” according to National Geographic Adventure magazine.
-
Imaginative Traveler – another “Do It All Outfitter” featured by National Geographic Adventure.
2. Travel Photos
When planning a trip, most travelers search only for familiar places — destinations they already know or can reach easily. Let’s change that.
Stretch your imagination and dare to dream beyond what feels possible. Try this exercise:
Think of three places or activities you find magical or unreachable. For example, seeing the Pyramids in Egypt, hiking Mount Everest, or visiting Antarctica.
Still think these are impossible? Search for them on a photo-sharing site like Flickr. You’ll find plenty of stunning photos taken by real travelers. These images prove that incredible adventures are within reach.
3. Travel and Adventure Websites
Many websites publish inspiring travel stories and guides. You may recognize these names, but perhaps you haven’t explored their sites yet.
-
Matador – an independent online travel magazine filled with fresh, inspiring writing.
-
National Geographic Adventure – part of the world-famous conservation organization. Visit this site for breathtaking photography and thrilling stories.
-
Lonely Planet – best known for its travel guidebooks. Their forums let you connect with other travelers and plan your own adventures.
Other Sources of Inspiration
You can also find adventure ideas in everyday life. Talk to fellow travelers, browse photography or guidebooks at the bookstore, or visit cultural neighborhoods in your city and try new foods.
If you stay curious and open to new experiences, you’ll find inspiration everywhere.
