If you’re looking for a unique European adventure, this Bosnia travel guide will show you why the country is a must-visit. Many people still associate Bosnia with war, but the reality is very different. Bosnia is beautiful, welcoming, and safer than most people assume.
Unlike some Western European cities, like Paris, I felt completely safe throughout my stay. If I had listened to my friends, I would have missed one of my favorite European trips.
What to See and Do in Bosnia
Bosnia offers a mix of adventure and history. You can enjoy white-water rafting or explore unique historical sites.
One of my favorite cities is Sarajevo. Here, you can:
-
Visit the bridge where World War I began
-
See Europe’s oldest public bathroom
-
Walk through tunnels Bosnians used during wartime
-
Taste traditional Bosnian food at local restaurants
-
Relax with Turkish-style coffee in a cozy café
Myths About Bosnia
Landmines: Many people worry about landmines, but you only find them deep in the mountains, far from towns and tourist areas.
War: The war ended decades ago. Bosnia is now peaceful, and locals welcome visitors warmly. While you can still see reminders of the past, the country is rebuilding and thriving.
Truths About Bosnia
Crime: I found the crime rate very low. Stay aware of your belongings, but you will likely feel safer than in many other European cities.
People: Bosnians are incredibly hospitable. They love to share their history and culture. I was lucky to meet my friend Irfan, who gave me a real look at Bosnian life.
Pyramids: Yes, pyramids! Near Visoko, researchers discovered structures some believe are Europe’s first pyramids. Some claim they are as old as, or older than, the Egyptian pyramids. You can read more in National Geographic.
Getting Around
Travel mostly by bus, as trains are less common than in Western Europe. Bus tickets are cheap, and you usually don’t need to book far ahead. Rail passes now work in Bosnia, but they weren’t always accepted.
For the best experiences, meet locals. They can show you hidden gems and share stories you won’t find in guidebooks.
Bosnia is full of history, natural beauty, and welcoming people. Don’t let outdated stereotypes stop you. Bosnia might become your favorite European destination.
